From the Laurentian Highlands to a Higher Place is an exhibition by WOO SEE-MING centred around his late mother that combines the artist’s photography with family archive images to create a visual journey that transports visitors back and forth between the year 2025 and a period of Quebec history often called “The Great Darkness”, spanning the 1940s to the late 1950s.
Quebec’s Laurentian Highlands — where WOO’s mother was born, grew up, worked as a waitress and fell in love with a Chinese cook — serve as both backdrop and supporting actor in this collection of old and new photographs.

A solo exhibition, consisting of eight framed and mounted works by WOO SEE-MING, will be on display as part of the Toronto Public Library’s Art Exhibits Space program from February 3-27, 2026 at the Forest Hill Branch.
