As children, we saw fortune cookies as mini crêpes curled up like the bent part of a saxophone and tasting like half-burnt sugary nothingness. We loved awkwardly crunching down on them, whole and unbroken, and injuring the roof of our little mouth every time. When visiting Montreal’s Chinatown, we often went into the offices of the Wing’s Food Company where our parents would speak to someone behind a counter who would hand over a huge bag of fortune-less fortune cookies (production errors). While waiting, we would stare into the framed black and white pictures of the Wing’s founder, strewn all across the walls, dressed in his World War II military gear and posing with his fellow Canadian soldiers. This anecdote has nothing to do with these captioned WOO SEE-MING instant prints, yet we also believe it very much does.
